In this conceptual project framework developed by Andrew Burges Architects continued the pursuit of architecture for a form of geography creating. It addressed the interested terrain of Bondi, which in the macro scale is closely connected to some of the archetypal experiences of Sydney’s geography — the Pacific Ocean, Coastal headlands, shore, big skies, and rugged coastal flora — but at the micro-scale of the person, the site is characterized by long, narrow websites of the poor building inventory and inadequate amenity in terms of pure light and privacy.
This project attempted to Overcome this dilemma by actively building a microgeometry on the website in terms of climate, amenity, and link to landscape and skies. The key job elements in creating this terrain is a subtle, yet varied topography of the ground plane, a brick base of varying heights in line with the outlooks they are screening or opening, and an upper level comprising three ‘bridges’ spanning the brickwork, creating an inner rhythm of bedroom volumes along with double-height skylight voids which specify the inside.
Materials include oak wood Care was taken to coordinate wood finishes across different trades and suppliers to maintain a simple, monolithic palette of concrete, brick, and wood putting the interplay of robust exterior and refined interior finishes inside the internal envelope of the home.
According to Andrew Burges Architects Key sustainability steps Included at the house is the use of thermal mass within the north-facing wall and also Floors, screened to reduce summer sunshine exposure and optimize winter exposure For passive heating; all chambers made for cross ventilation with ceiling fans To remove air conditioning; underfloor heating and gasoline heater as the primary form of heating; heat extractors concealed within roof loft to discharge summer Heat buildup within upper-level rooms and double-height voids, materials Selected for durability and endurance, LED lighting used throughout, wiring for Provision of solar panels on the roof, rainwater capture and re-use for Toilets, water, and irrigation.
